* The speed of life

Have you ever noticed that cities run at a very fast pace? The people in them do, too. The further you get away from a city, the more life slows down to a reasonable pace. It's frustrating for a country person to adjust to the pace. We take vacations so that we can take a break from the 'hustle and bustle'. And although it seems to be a Western phenomenon, Tokyo moves just as fast as New York. The whole world needs to move faster just to keep up with the West. But what is all this rushing around doing to our energy? Well, think about what happens when we get into a hurry in our personal life. We lose out on many experiences when we rush past them. We focus only on keeping disaster from happening, driving down the middle of the lane, not enjoying the pleasant things like the flowers beside the road. We make mistakes that cost us future goals. We try to fit too much into too little time, and wind up dropping something in the juggle. We have accidents when we are in a hurry.

When you apply this to a large scale setting like a city, a nation, or a society, what happens is that we miss out on experiences, focusing only on averting disaster. Good news and positive stories aren't talked about. (baby animals born in Zoos no longer make the headlines.) We overlook details (the 9-11 warnings) that undermine us. We have accidents.(blackouts and suburban fires, food poisonings in restaurants)

What this means Tantrically is that we are artificially raising our vibrations to a level we are not comfortable with. We push ourselves beyond where we need to be and into an area we are not ready to assimilate to. This creates havoc and chaos, dissonance and disharmony in our lives. To be held to artificial deadlines, artificial time boundaries, and artificial rhythms puts more stress on the human system than is ever truly necessary for the experience of life. We attempt to keep up our rhythms to get more done, to absorb more experience, to get on top of things, but in reality, the things that are really necessary, like cleaning our air and our water, are not getting done. We spend time and energy on unnecessary things (wars) that no human is happy about. The experiences we intentionally attempt to absorb become less intense and more of "just another amusement device." We become numb to suffering, unless it's our own. Humans cannot take this pressure forever. The signs of our cracking as a society are more and more blatent every day. People are shooting other people on highways. Kids are killing kids in schools. We see violence on tv every night, so that we think it is normal when we see it in person. We tolerate -even EXPECT- politicians lying to us. We expect to be ripped off everywhere we go, and live paranoid. As a society, we're in deep shit, because when you rush so fast that you can't stop, you hit something. Hard.

As a society we need to put the brakes on, and that needs to begin with individuals slowing down. Take a look at how you are living. Are there things that take more time and energy in your life than they are worth? Do you spend more time trying to pay for things you want rather than enjoying the things you have? Are you giving your energy away to inanimate objects, like calendars and clocks?

If so, simplify. Think critically about the items you spend time working on or working to pay for. If you don't truly need those things, get rid of them and remember those are things you won't have to do maintenance on,work for, or worry about having stolen.

Get rid of time wasters, cut back on the number of deadlines you live by. Start putting "ish" on the end of appointment times, like 1:00-ish. That gives you space to breathe, and breathing is what it's all about.

Slow down and breathe, experience the world around you. You will be one of the few but growing number of people that are trying to put the brakes on this society's upcoming "deadman's curve."

Forget about keeping up with the Joneses. Mr. Jones is going to die of a heart attack at 50, because he couldn't keep up with himself.
