Pranayama Breathing Exercise: Sit comfortably in an upright position, on a chair or sofa. Put your feet on the ground and your hands beside you. Do not cross your legs or clasp your hands together. Begin by breathing very deeply, filling your lungs completely, and then emptying your lungs completely. Be aware of your diaphragm and your stomach muscles. When you inhale, extend your stomach outward so that your diaphragm drops and leaves more room to fill your lungs. When you exhale, pull your stomach muscles inward, which will push your diaphragm up and help you expell all the air. This might feel like breathing ?backwards?, but what it is doing is allowing you more oxygen with each breath. When you have the stomach muscles figured out, slow down the process. Take air inward as slowly and as smoothly as humanly possible. Exhale just as slowly, keeping the length of the exhale and the inhale equal. If you have to, you can use numbers to count the length of each inhale and exhale. The idea is to keep that extra oxygen in your lungs long enough to be entirely metabolized. So now you are breathing slow, even, and deeply. You might find your muscles relaxing a little, and get into a comfortable (although slow) rhythm. Allow all the muscles in your body to relax....check your toes, your face, your hands, your shoulders. Begin visualizing the air in the room around you as breatheable light. As you inhale, you are inhaling light. As you exhale, the light changes color, and comes out with all the negativity in your system. So you breathe in fresh light, and exhale whatever you need to get rid of. See the light filling your body, travelling thru your nervous system and making the exchange with all the energy at the extremeties of your body. In with the fresh, out with the old. Keep this up for at least 28 minutes. Why 28 minutes? The human brain uses both hemispheres for different reasons, and switches back and forth regularly. The average amount of time we spend in either hemisphere is 28 minutes. If you can keep this relaxed, slow process going for at least that long, you are benefitting both sides of your brain. Sometimes, as our brain makes the shift, if we are in this relaxed headspace, it can allow us to go astrally travelling. Sometimes, we simply wind up with a solution to a long-term problem. This method is harmless in all respects and should be practiced regularly for health and well being. © 1999 -2005 Sienna Newcastle |
