You know.....
Sometimes I wonder about what is written here and what will happen to it in 10 or 20 years. Will the internet exist, or will this information be wiped out like so many burned books of the previous century? Will it go the way of 8-track tapes and Beta movies? Or will it just continue to build on itself, and some day some archeological computer tech will dig out these essays?
What got me started on this thought train was that I picked up the biography of Wilhelm Reich. He was a psychologist, a student of Freud's, who had some shocking ideas regarding human thought and orgasmic energy. His books were burned in the 1950's by the Food and Drug Administration (not the FBI...curious, huh?) The remaining records he kept were put under lock and key until the year 2007....
Well, folks, it's 2003. In 4 more years some of the most amazing scientific research will be pulled out of the mothballs where the McCarthy-Era paranoia stuffed it half a century ago. Since that time the world has changed, and many of Reich's ideas have come to be not so crazy. Sex is now known to be healthy for the human system, and the spread of Tantra and things like Tai Chi have this generation primed for what Reich had to say. Neurolinguistic Programming is one of those dynamic new sciences that can trace some of it's roots back to Reich's work with 'orgone energy'.
Anyone who has studied Tantra, Karezza, or even some forms of yoga can tell you that there is some sort of energy that fits the description of Reich's "orgone energy." Any neuroscientist can tell you that there ARE electrical impulses in our nervous system and we DO feel them surge from time to time. There's no way we couldn't feel those surges.
The big question in 2003 is not whether orgone energy exists, or even exactly what it is, because we now know that much (even tho, in the west, we still have no name for this phenomenon). The question today seems to be "What causes it?" In some circumstances it takes great effort to bring about this higher vibration of the nervous system. In other circumstance, a mere thought can pluck it like a guitar string. Indeed, that is the paradox of this energy phenomenon, the feeling/acting of the energy called Kundalini in the East.
It is undeniable to the person experiencing it, and even observable to a certain extent by someone not experiencing it directly. However, it is very short lived in most cases, and the mere act of bringing it about causes chaos in it's midst. For these reasons it is difficult to study in a laboratory, although I'm sure someone somewhere has done it. I'm still looking for the results of those studies, so if you know of them, please email me. Perhaps this is the course of my own lab work in the future?
In any case, when 2007 rolls around, I intend to be one of the first to get my hands on whatever pieces of Reich's work are still available. His contribution to science has been hidden for years, and it will be very public when those records are released. If you don't know the story behind Reich himself, please put the name Wilhelm Reich into a search engine and find out all you can about him. You got about 4 years.
